Finance industry 'must work to make itself appealing again'

The finance industry has had its image dented among jobs applicants as a result of the ongoing credit crunch, an expert has said.

According to Maria Bentley, global head of HR for UBS, it could potentially be years before the sector is perceived as an attractive career path by people looking for work.

Speaking to Personnel Today, she said: "It's true our sector is not very popular right now and that may continue for several years.

"We need to handle ourselves well and ensure we are part of the solution in order to repair our industry."

Meanwhile, speaking to the Edinburgh Journal recently, careers advisor at Napier University Steve McLellan said that there are still finance jobs available to graduates seeking such work.

He stated that many large firms have invested a lot of time in raising their profiles at universities so they will continue recruiting despite the economic problems.
